A very fine Louis XV carved giltwood fauteuil by Blaise Maucuy stamped B. MAUCUY, with a cartouche-shaped padded back, drop-in seat and padded arm rests covered in a red floral damask, the finely carved channelled frame with toprail centred by a foliate and floral crest, the shoulder angles with floral and foliate sprays, with scrolled arms and a shaped and channelled seat rail centred by a floral spray on floral headed cabriole legs

Received as a mâitre in July 1758, like many fellow menuisiers Blaise Maucuy (1729-98) was established in the Bonne-Nouvelle quarter of Paris where he continued in business until the late 1780 ths. Maucuy produced a number of chairs in the Louis XV style, featuring similar lines and carved ornamentation as here. However in keeping with changing fashions he also made seats in the prevailing Neo-classical style, epitomized by their elegant and fine designs. Unlike many other fauteuils this example has a drop-in rather fixed seat. A similar fauteuil by the same maker was included in the Carlhian Collection, which was sold 7th December 1968 (lot 53).
