Literature

Charles Terwilliger, A Century of fine Carriage clocks, Clock Trade Enterprise 1987, p. 118-119, illustrating this clock.

A very fine late 19th Century gilt brass carriage clock with Grande sonnerie, alarm and perpetual calendar,

Paris, date circa 1880

Height 29.5 cm (with handle)

This impressive clock is not only notable for its double dial, which numbers, minutes in five minute segments as well as hours, but also for the fact that, when it was being restored, the case was found to be in 105 individual pieces. The eight free-standing columns, the stepped aera between base and dial and the arched dial frame are all unusual.

The calendar dial is perpetual and shows moon phase, day of the week, month, each month with its zodiacal sign, and day of month. Gearing for the perpetual calendar, which is linked to the time train, can be seen under the movement back plate below the 2-hour alarm set dial. A three-position lever for grande sonnerie, petite sonnerie and silence is under the base.
